Prolate Cores in Filamentary Molecular Clouds

چکیده

We present a new model of molecular cloud cores that originate from filamentary clouds that are threaded by helical magnetic fields. Only modest toroidal fields are required to produce elongated cores, with intrinsic axis ratios in the range 0.1 < ∼ q < ∼ 0.9 and mean projected axis ratios in the range 0.3 < ∼ 〈p〉 < ∼ 1. Thus many of our models are in good agreement with the observed shapes of cores (Myers et al 1991, Ryden 1996), which find axis ratios distributed about the mean values 〈p〉 ≈ 0.5− 0.6 and q ≈ 0.4− 0.5. We find that the Bonnor-Ebert critical mass is reduced by about 20% by the helical field threading our models. We also find that models are generally most elongated when the mass is significantly less than the Bonnor-Ebert critical mass for unmagnetized cores. Shapes of Molecular Cloud Cores and the Filamentary Mode of Star Formation

Using recent dust continuum data, we generate the intrinsic ellipticity distribution of dense, starless molecular cloud cores. Under the hypothesis that the cores are all either oblate or prolate randomly-oriented spheroids, we show that a satisfactory fit to observations can be obtained with a gaussian prolate distribution having a mean intrinsic axis ratio of 0.54. Further, we show that corre...

Embedded, Self-gravitating Equilibria in Sheetlike and Filamentary Molecular Clouds

Numerical solutions of the isothermal Lane-Emden equation are presented, corresponding to self-gravitating gaseous cores embedded within a finite density envelope of overall cylindrical symmetry. These structures may be members of a fragmentation hierarchy proceeding from sheets, to filaments, to elongated, prolate clumps. The embedded solutions are the first of their kind, and as such represen...

The Intrinsic Shapes of Molecular Cloud Fragments over a Range of Length Scales

We decipher intrinsic three-dimensional shape distributions of molecular clouds, cloud cores, Bok globules, and condensations using recently compiled catalogues of observed axis ratios for these objects mapped in carbon monoxide, ammonia, through optical selection, or in continuum dust emission. We apply statistical techniques to compare assumed intrinsic axis ratio distributions with observed ...

Magnetic Braking of Prolate and Oblate Cores

The collapse and fragmentation of initially prolate and oblate, magnetic molecular clouds is calculated in three dimensions with a gravitational, radiative hydrodynamics code. The code includes magnetic field effects in an approximate manner: magnetic pressure, tension, braking, and ambipolar diffusion are all modelled. The parameters varied for both the initially prolate and oblate clouds are ...

Intrinsic Shapes of Molecular Cloud Cores

We conduct an analysis of the shapes of molecular cloud cores using recently compiled catalogs of observed axis ratios of individual cores mapped in ammonia or through optical selection. We apply both analytical and statistical techniques to de-project the observed axis ratios in order to determine the true distribution of cloud core shapes. We find that neither pure oblate nor pure prolate cor...
